This is my Buffalo Classic Rifle
| My next
move was to move the target back to 100 yards and give it another try. I set my targets up with two 25 yards pistol targets stacked vertically. That way I don't have to make as many trips downrange to change them. At this range my eyesight comes into question. I wear bi-focals, progressive type, nevertheless, I wanted to see what it would do. Not having much experience with the tang sight, or the 45-70 for that matter, I wasn't sure how much to elevate the peep sight.
This is our range. The base of the hill is just beyond the 600yd point. That is not my Buffalo Classic pictured. After making what I guess to be an appropriate amount I fired off a round. At 100 yards I could easily see the holes with binoculars, or so I thought. At the first shot I picked up the bino's and looked at the bottom target I had just shot at. Hmmmm, no hole. Was I too low or too high?

I fired
off another one and looked again. Still no hole in the black I could see. Not
having a lot of ammo I took a trip downrange to have a closer look.
What I saw made me giddy. Two bullet holes side by side about 1/2" apart, but in the white right where the two targets were overlapping. Not where I was looking at all. The grouping I loved and decided to shoot a third before adjusting the sight. Now I could see the bullet holes clearly and the third one was very close to the other two. Above is a picture of just how close. |
Update: This great grouping was using Speer 400gr jacketed bullets. They perform very well in the Buffalo Classic. The tang sight set up performs very well too. Unfortunately, my eyes do not. I began having trouble, in the following weeks, with inconsistent clarity in my shooting eye. So much so that I could sometime barely get 4-5" groups. I decided that it was time to either scope the BC or move on to a different type of rifle. I decided to move on. Looking back, I wish I'd kept the Buffalo Classic. I could have come up with some other sighting system that would still fit the BC. Oh well, live and learn. I traded the BC off at my local dealer for a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. To make a long story short, I soon traded that off for a H&R 223 Ultra Varmint with 24" bull barrel and laminated stock. I'll have an article and pics soon on that one. |
